Between Elite and Noticing
Wherein a bad-faith read harnesses a language
Between Elite and Noticing
Note:
Speaking from the heart indistinguishable from speaking with confidence, I am not confident what I say is true. Confidence here is from the heart (confident what is said comes from the heart). Language makes no distinction, note it.
Possible Creatures
A small green winged thing may crawl up my finger, though I won't call it by a taxonomic name. It's taxonixic name is jumps-winged-small-thing. (I notice I am sensitive to what words would like to exist where.)
Living beyond survival for some month, I teach myself Korean. Having never taught myself another language before, I teach wrong. The goal to learn Korean to do poetry set in letters to relatives who are, themselves, Korean, it's fine I don't learn Korean proper. A dialect only I speak (ideolect).
Jumps-winged-small-thing - jwst, for short - takes the gap from what hand holds the paper I write on, to the hand I write with.
To me, this is indistinguishable from jumping from one side of the universe to the other. A single hop, done. Jumps do, in places, do this. At the end of the universe is a restaurant in no small number of universes.
Such jumps require energy the mass of jupiter to do this. In matters of eyelash-thick legs jwst be equipped exhibiting mass greater than that of jupiter, I consent otherwise.
But It's Possible
Korean, as not language but speaking pattern is the kind of pattern that wants to say it all in a single word. λμ΄λ¨λ Έμ΄ - "I knocked them over" (literally: knocking-over-(past tense particle)-happened). All verb.πΈ All done in the verb -
not because understood-you is
unpleasant. But because wording is
indistinguishable from a loss of magic -
Experience, in English, arrives in the word: what happens has been spelled out. The listener's (read: reader's) assignment is to untangle and discern.
There is a correct way to understand.
I said. I store went - "Went to the store". In Korean: storeward-went-ing. Here, understood-you goes to the extreme. In flying colors. No helicopter mom's, no boxing in's until there is no out for the read. I mean what I said. μ λ§μ μ§μ¬μ λλ€ - "these words are μ§μ¬" (literally genuineness and heart, sharing roots). Reader is fledged (trusted to be a blessing, to help words of true-heart out). "Sincere" roots in sculpture. "True-heart" goes cardiac.
Sealioning, Irony, Sarcasm, Oh My
A veritable jardin (to borrow from the gemologist), Griefer culture subsists on the μ§μ¬, the attention of words call reader. Attention (specifically attention in neither its past nor future form) is money. Your time. μλͺ .
Made form of study, Griefing is what coerses the reader to trust - English trust the reader to read in bad faith. Made creature - and the world its forest - a griefer might be the poison frog. Contrast fascist in a same forest, and you get a (noisy) cricket. A fascist griefer, a biting midge.
A language built around the assupption the reader is a poison frog normalizes combat: it's hell. English is hell (assupption is not a thing). To feel safe is to feel a phantom limb.
A correct way to read an English sentence existing (alongside all bad-faith reads) is the rule.
What exception exists, English teaches, costs English its own legibility. This lesson rare by design: a trauma-informed read - to look at the body of English, See its plates; its terrible scars - is this exception.π«
See Example
Child (listening to their parent saying this bucket has kicked the bucket) says huh?, in the way that means "finally, nothing makes any sene anymore." Parent, reconfiguring, floats: this bucket is broken - this bucket has "kicked the bucket". Idiom translation loss is severe in children - see it again, in νκΈ.
What might you make of this, other language?
Korean is not set up for the idiom. The idiomatic, the register, is ceremonial: "expired" μλͺ μ or "left us" μλͺ μ. It's subtler, in Korean. The μλͺ , the reader's attention, has to live the life in reality. Which isn't fair - kicked the bucket deserves to exist in any language it wants. Translating the bucket kicked the bucket doesn't see the bucket kick anything. It just μλͺ μ λ€νλ€. Translation: no bucket.
And So The Head Did Split
Being monolingual, even outside a loneliness pandemic, is a recipe for pathology. It's tenderqueer safeism, discomfort and failure made one-to-one (I am uncomfortable === something is wrong). The dangers of safetyποΈ, pain is monolingual:
Pain is immoral.
Pain as "weakness leaving the body" is ablist, not fascist. Fascism sees pain immoral: a mark on the assignment as harping parent, a low number on a banger post as losing followers, a low citation count on an exquisite paper as losing funding.
Academia is indistinguishable from telling someone you love them by putting them in a bubble for their own protection. Lock them in. Set the fundamentals to read-only (to borrow from the programmer). Find this bubbles pair to jump to an example.π«§
Languages are verbs: around me, in ny valley of bad-faith reads, kicking a bucket is indistinguishable from dying. English is perhaps the bad place: the place toldπ€¬ to be The Good Placeπ, and consenting otherwise.
Do I, as this paragraph, agree with the above paragraph? Or was it a bad-faith read (does faith want to be good)? I ask the next paragraph. Formally:
Faith (that's you), do you want to be good?
Notice the sentence is constructed such Faith (proper name) and faith (abstract concept or verb), is careful. Ambiguated, the structure of this sentence a lot of work. Sentences don't function this generously (in English - whereas in Korean it is cheap as breathingπ«). That sentence cost a lot, proficiency at giving the reader breathing room is not taught. It's discouraged.
And the Reader Fights Tooth and Nail
- This feel like an assignment, in places?
- Your neighbors take well to assignments?
- They read every sentence like its an assigment?
- Would you teach your neighbor another language?
- Or drug them? β(Of course - just checking.)
- Be a professional: asking maybe "what do you want?"
- Is the (in)ability to want verified, before said ask?
- Have your words done the work to enable their wanting?
- You don't think it safe to assume otherwise?

Beyond this point are the footnotes, which include (but are not limited to) an image of a naked man personifiying the English language.
